Inside Canada’s First Cannabis Wedding Expo

A few years ago, those looking to enjoy cannabis at a wedding needed to wait until after the speeches to wink at the bride, groom, maid of honour, or best man before retiring behind a dumpster in their wedding apparel to smoke a matrimonial joint while everyone else got freely blitzed at the open bar.

Thanks to legalization, however, the divide between alcohol and cannabis at weddings is closing.

Back in January, perhaps the most memorable moment of the Lift & Co. 2019 Vancouver trade show was Andy Le proposing to his partner Sabrina onstage during a panel, making clear that three months into legalization, weddings and cannabis could be closer together than ever.

That distance closed further last weekend in Calgary at the Canadian Cannabis Wedding Expo, where eager crowds came to learn how to openly incorporate cannabis into their weddings.

Organizer Laureen Cauryn-Cameron explains, “You can do it aesthetically in the flowers, you can have it as a wedding favour. It can be anything from adding a few drops of CBD oil, which is non-[intoxicating], into your tea or smoking up a cannabis cigar. There are different alternatives to what people can think of as a cannabis wedding.”
