Myrcene

myrcene
(Leafly)

Myrcene is a terpene found in the cannabis plant, as well as in other plants such as mango, lemongrass, basil, and hops. It has an earthy, peppery aroma with sweet, fruity undertones and notes of mango and balsam. Some studies on animals have found myrcene can act as a muscle relaxant, pain reliever, anti-inflammatory and sedative in rodents, but studies are needed to confirm that humans can also benefit from these effects.

“I can taste myrcene in this strain.”

“Riper mangoes have higher levels of myrcene.”

What is myrcene?

Myrcene is a terpene found in the cannabis plant, as well as in other plants such as mango, lemongrass, basil, and hops. It is one of the most common terpenes in cannabis, and most commonly the dominant terpene in cannabis strains. It has an earthy, peppery aroma with sweet, fruity undertones and notes of mango and balsam.

What is myrcene used for?

Myrcene is found in lemongrass, which has been used in traditional folk medicine for its anti-anxiety and pain-relieving properties. While myrcene is believed to be responsible for these effects by some, research is still not clear on the connection. Some studies on animals have found myrcene can act as a muscle relaxant and offer pain relief to rodents but studies are needed to confirm that humans can also benefit from this relaxing effect.

Some also believe it has sedative properties, and some animal research supports this, but human research has also yet to confirm this theory. In addition, there is some limited animal research suggesting that myrcene may have antiinflammatory effects.

Myrcene has been shown to improve transdermal absorption of cannabinoids, so some use it as an additive in topical lotions and balms.

How do you use myrcene?

To utilize myrcene in your cannabis, look for products that test high in myrcene or strains that tend to have myrcene as the dominant terpene. Since myrcene is so common, it’s easy to find. Look for strains like OG Kush, Blue Dream, Grape Ape, and Tangie which are naturally high in myrcene.
