In Canada, cannabis may be legalized but the stigma of weed odour is still alive and well. Regardless of whether cannabis is legal where you live, you likely will still have to contend with roommates, parents, and neighbours who might take issue with the skunky scent of smoking cannabis.

Instead of just stuffing a towel under the door, let’s take odour control to the next level. Introducing the sploof—a classic method of odour reduction, it’s a handheld contraption that filters particulate matter from your exhale to reduce the smell of smoke.

Whether you make your own or buy an already made sploof, you simply blow the smoke into one end of the device and the sploof scrubs the smoke while it pushes through. While sploofs certainly aren’t smell-proof, they can help reduce the dank stank of your cannabis.

Tried and true: The DIY Solution

Device cost: Free(ish)

Need a sploof fast and at practically no cost?

All you need to McGyver your own is a finished toilet paper roll, 4-6 dryer sheets, and elastic bands.

Stuff the roll with dryer sheets, and then take a few more dryer sheets and lay them flat on one end of the roll.

Use the elastic bands to secure the dryer sheets snuggly onto the end of the roll. And there you have it, a sploof that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

You can even decorate it too. Want to call it “David Blowie,” in honour of the rockstar’s 1976 arrest for weed? Go right ahead! You can even bedazzle it with fake jewels if you’re into arts and crafts.

Let’s be honest, your homemade sploof isn’t going to be as air-tight as the manufactured ones with their chambers and carbon filtersso a little smell will linger. But it’s certainly better than no sploof at all.

While the Smokebuddy can be held in your hand, it is probably too big for your pocket. The device is a one-time use only and doesn’t have replaceable filters.

Smokebuddy comes in a variety of visual designs, including tie-dye, camo, or your favourite primary and secondary colours.

The company estimates the Smokebuddy is good for about 300 exhales. They also have a smaller “junior” model, as well as a larger “mega” model. So if portability or long-lasting use are your top wants, you might want to try those variations.

Eco Four Twenty

Device cost: $35 CAD

Replacement filters: $21 CAD, pack of 2

The Eco Four Twenty is sleek and solid with an aircraft-grade aluminum casing. It honestly feels like a regular sploof, just fancier. This small, cylindrical device is a heavyweight that exudes, “I am unbreakable.”

While it costs a bit more than the Smokebuddy, the Eco Four Twenty has a replaceable cartridge system that uses activated carbon as well as a HEPA filter, good for 500 exhales.

The Eco Four Twenty feels good in your hand and is attractive enough to leave on your coffee table. The replaceable filter makes it one of the more eco-friendly options. Plus the founders are Canadian!

Sploofy

Device cost: $25+ CAD

Replacement filters: $50 CAD, pack of 3

Sploofy was one of the first competitors to Smokebuddy and has a legion of fans. They are on version three of the device and seem to have worked the kinks out.

The Sploofy also has a reusable filter system and boasts a non-plastic, biodegradable filter.

While Sploofy’s website doesn’t estimate how many exhales you get, this bad boy lasted us quite a while.

The device is covered with a sheath of hard plastic, which reveals an ugly undercarriage containing the filter and a big wad of glue holding a mesh screen onto the filter. But hey, does anyone’s car look clean under the hood?

So which sploof is the best? That’s a hard question because there are so many factorseach sploof has its own pros and cons. In our tests, all of them were able to dissipate the smoke, leaving only a trace of cannabis odour.

So whether you’re looking for something that fits in your pocket, starts a conversation, or provides a long-lasting solution, there’s a sploof for you.
