A joint is a rolled marijuana “cigarette,” or cannabis wrapped in a rolling paper. Rolling papers can be made from wood pulp, hemp, rice, and other materials. Joints are one of the most common methods of smoking cannabis.

“Smoking joints helps with pain in my joints.”

“You want to spark up this joint before the show?”

What is a joint?

Joints are one of the most ubiquitous methods of consuming cannabis, sometimes called “marijuana cigarettes” by those unfamiliar with smoking them.

Joints can fit in your pocket and be taken anywhere, and are easy to consume—just light the end and inhale. However, it does take some skill in learning how to roll one.

Joint-rollers are small devices that can help you roll a joint, and today, pre-rolls are popular—joints that can be bought in the store that are ready to go and don’t require rolling.

Pre-rolls are a type of joint that come pre-rolled and ready to smoke, that you can buy in cannabis stores. Joints are distinct from blunts because they are usually smaller and use rolling paper rather than a blunt wrap, which is usually made from tobacco.

How to roll a joint

You’ll need:

  • Some cannabis
  • Rolling papers
  • Grinder (optional)
  • Crutch (optional)

Most pre-rolls in dispensaries come as half a gram or a full gram, so start with a quantity around that. A grinder is very helpful when rolling a joint, but not necessary. They save time in breaking down buds, and finely ground weed will ensure a steady, even burn. Also, a crutch can be a nice addition to a joint as it adds structural support.

To roll a joint:

  • Grind up/break down the cannabis
  • If using a crutch, roll one up
  • Put the ground-up cannabis and crutch in a rolling paper
  • Even out the cannabis and roll it up
  • Lick and seal the gummed edge
  • Twist the tip

Now all you have to do is light the end and enjoy.
