Strains to Enjoy
Albert Walker
Albert Walker is one of the best-smelling and tasting buds I’ve ever smoked. I peeped it when I was in Portland, and it had ya boy in that “Yo, just put something on and please don’t talk to me right now” kind of stuck mode.
Alaskan Thunder Fuck
I usually go straight indica for these strain suggestions, but ATF is a great strain to smoke and chill on. It produces one of those highs that hits you in the face at first, but as time progresses, it starts to creep throughout the body and you start to feel higher, and higher, and higher, until out of nowhere you think, “HEY MOM! THE MEATLOAF! WE WANT IT NOW!”
Cherry Pie
Cherry Pie is my shiiit. Whew! It’s a feel-good strain that’ll stick to your bones for quite some time. And don’t let the name fool you. It’s a hybrid whose high feels closer to the indica side due to the body effects it’ll hit you with. Smoke this and you won’t immediately pass out, but you’ll definitely want to kick back and relax in your own zone. And then you’ll pass out.
What to Watch in October 2017
Orange County (2002)
Platform: HBO GO
Genre: Comedy (movie)
Mood: You Just Want to Get Stoned and Laugh at Some Dumb Shit
Orange County’s one of those stupid movies that you know is stupid, but that’s exactly why you love it. It stars Colin Hanks (son of Forrest Gump) and Jack Black as two brothers who, after a guidance counselor sends the wrong transcript to Stanford, go on a quest to right that wrong. But what ensues? Pure fuckery, that’s what. If you’re looking for a silly billy nilly type of flick, this is what you need.
Little Evil (2017)

Genre: Horror/Comedy (movie)
Mood: You’re Craving a Little Suspense, But You Want to Have Fun With It
Netflix has been surprising the shit out of me lately with its original content. Last month we talked about What Happened to Monday, and this month Little Evil is up to bat. It stars Adam Scott as a man who marries a woman with a possessed demon child, and he has to figure out how to not only maintain his marriage, but also exorcise this kid. It’s hilarious, but there are still creepy elements that make the hairs on your arms stand up, which is why it’s perfect for the aforementioned mood.
American Ultra (2015)

Genre: Action/Comedy (movie)
Mood: You Want to Get a Little Weird on Some Stoner Shit
I saw American Ultra in theaters on one of my “I’m way too stoned to stay in the house” nights, and I was fairly pleased with it. It stars Jesse Eisenberg as a dude who was basically trained as a weapon for the CIA, and then they decide that he poses a threat to their operation so they send out the “Go get him” message to their shooters, but…well…their shooters aren’t messing with the kid.
I’d never sell it as the best movie ever or anything, but it’s definitely perfect for Smoke This, Watch That because it’s 1) for sure a stoner flick, 2) has a love story that keeps your attention, and 3) has gunfire and blood spilling galore. Plus the cinematography is super dope.
Creed (2015)

Genre: Drama/Action (movie)
Mood: You Need Something That’ll Get You Hyped Enough to Chase Some Goals
Creed stars Michael B. Jordan as Apollo Creed’s son who goes to be trained by Rocky Balboa in an effort to make his own name in boxing. It’s one of the best movies I’ve seen in recent times, and Michael B. should’ve gotten all the awards for it, but we won’t talk about that. It’s the type of movie that you get high and watch, then suddenly find yourself energetic as hell and ready to unleash a 74-hit combo on the nearest punching bag.
Addiction Incorporated (2011)
Platform: Hulu
Genre: Documentary (movie)
Mood: You Want a Documentary That’ll Teach You Something You Knew, But Didn’t Know You Knew
Addiction Incorporated is a documentary about how the tobacco industry used to the sell the dream of “Nicotine is not addictive” while they were doing research and experiments to make sure nicotine is addictive. Complete with flashback videos and court footage, it stars the scientists who were in charge of the experiments and were also at the forefront of exposing the tobacco CEOs’ lies. It’s pretty fascinating and also feels like a thriller because the whole time you’re almost like a fly on the wall of a courtroom, just waiting for shit to the hit the fan. There were even times where I had to pause it and regain my composure because my anxiety was through the roof.
Dying Laughing (2016)
Platform: Hulu
Genre: Documentary (movie)
Mood: You Want a Documentary That’ll Generate Some Self-Reflection
Starring all of your favorite and most legendary comedians, Dying Laughing is an intimate documentary that details the pain and horrors that go on behind the scenes in the stand-up comedy world. The comedians sit in a chair and explain their trials and tribulations from starting out in stand-up, how trash touring can be, and ultimately how stand-up comedy might be fun for the audience, but the game can be absolute torture for the comedians. It’s pretty interesting and very worth your time.
Animal Fight Night (2013-present)
Platform: Netflix
Genre: Documentary series
Mood: You Just Want to Get High and Watch Some Wild Nature Shit
Animals be fightin’, animals be fightin’. You can’t stop animals from fightin’. This is a three-episode doc about—you guessed it—animals in nature fighting to the death, not only for survival reasons, but also for petty-ass reasons. (Elephant seals get down.)
George Carlin: Life Is Worth Losing (2005)
Platform: Amazon Prime
Genre: Stand-up comedy special
Mood: You Want to Laugh at the World, Then Think and Get Mad at the World Again
Carlin is rude, crude, and right up in your face with this special about, well, everything that’s wrong with the world and how everyone is stupid. He talks about education for children being trash, America’s problem with consumerism in the forms of overeating and shopping, but mostly he talks about death and all the taboo subjects surrounding it: suicide; assassination; torture; beheadings. It’s extremely dark, but man, it’s so damn good. R.I.P. to the legend.
Chris D’Elia: Man on Fire (2017)
Platform: Netflix
Genre: Stand-up comedy special
Mood: You Just Want to Laugh at Some Goofy Shit
You already know what you’re getting from Chris D’Elia: jokes about how stupid you are (and everyone else). But man, his impressions and all those quirky-ass voices are so damn funny. Man on Fire was hilarious. I’ve never been the biggest fan of his brand of comedy, but I’m starting to come around. Dude’s got talent.
Atlanta (2016-present)
Platform: Hulu/FXNOW
Genre: Comedy/Drama (TV)
Mood: You Want a Show That’ll Pull You in on a Personal Level, Not Just Entertain You
Atlanta is one of the single greatest TV shows to ever exist, and I’m so glad it’s finally on a streaming platform that doesn’t force me to watch 76 advertisements during viewing, because that FXNow app experience was pure hell for anyone who wanted to rewatch or catch up. It stars Donald Glover as a man trying to find his way in the world, who begins managing his cousin, up-and-coming rapper Paperboy. But really, it’s a show about the black experience from an angle that’s about life in the hood, but really life in general. It’s so smart, it’s so funny, it’s so raw and real, it’s…man, it’s special. If you haven’t checked it out, now’s your chance.
