Jack Herer reviews
I have literally no idea why, nearly 25 years after Jack Herer’s exact genetics were revealed, that there are still so many online sources - including reputable ones such as Leafly - that continue to perpetuate the myth that Shiva Skunk was one of the parents of Jack Herer, which had always been an assumption in the first place. Yet even after Nevil & Sensi Seeds revealed the precise genetics & history of the plant, there are still so much incorrect information online, as well as a significant number of people that continue to believe that Jack Herer contains Shiva Skunk. Sensi Seeds very clearly stated that Jack Herer’s heritage consisted of (Northern Lights #5 x Haze A) x (Skunk #1 x Haze C). The exact version of NL5/Haze used was the very first version of that legendary cross - Nevil’s late 1980s (Northern Lights #5 x Haze A), which produced the holy grail known as Piff aka Cuban Black Haze, as well as the S1 seeds that later produced Karma’s legendary A5 Haze, the closest living relative of either of Nevil’s tragically lost Haze A & Haze C males. The same has been confirmed by Nevil. THERE IS NO SHIVA SKUNK IN JACK HERER!
Nevil spent years working hard to isolate the desirable traits, & to breed out the garbage genetics present in the Haze Brother’s legendary & unimaginably valuable, yet very genetically inconsistent Santa Cruz Original Haze aka O Haze, the 1970s F1 cross of three phenomenal, yet totally raw Colombian landrace Sativas.
In its original form, O Haze seeds resulted in very high quality offspring about 50% of time, & decent offspring 25% of the time. The final 25% of its offspring occasionally had some desirable traits, but would produce total garbage plants - worthless offspring, with mostly undesirable, poor quality genetics. Genes left over from the genetics of the original landraces used to breed the O Haze.
To make matters worse, the O Haze offspring all require 20-24 weeks to flower, with some traits apparent early in their development cycles, but the ultimate quality of the plants grown from O Haze seeds really only apparent after the plant had finished blooming, been harvested, dried, trimmed, cured, & the buds smoked. Whether or not the offspring was quality or not, depended almost entirely on traits that were only apparent after smoking the flower.
O Haze remained totally inconsistent for nearly a decade, until Nevil spent the greater part of the late 1980s working several generations of O Haze, in order to breed the mediocre & poor quality traits that remained in its genetic profile out of Haze, selecting only the plants that expressed the most desirable qualities as parents for each subsequent filial generation.
After 3-4 years of selective breeding, Nevil finally succeeded in producing two Haze males, both with very different characteristics, yet which each expressed concentrated, high quality desirable genetic traits of the O Haze, with little to none of the garbage genetics that were present in the genetics of the Haze Brothers’ Original Haze. These were the Haze A and Haze C males, & while both have been lost, they were both extremely crucial plants in the history of cannabis hybrids.
Either one or both of the Haze A and Haze C males form the backbone of several of the greatest hybrids ever bred, including Nevil’s Diesel, Neville’s Haze, Jack Herer, Super Silver Haze, Mango Haze, Afghan Haze, Skunk Haze, G13 Haze, the Amnesia Hy-Pro cut of Super Silver Haze, & so many more vital plants in the history of cannabis breeding, and the majority of Nevil & Shantibaba’s late ‘90s-2000s breeding work for Shantibaba’s Mr. Nice Genetics used them, including arguably the very best work Mr. Nice released after Super Silver Haze & Mango Haze: the Haze AC ~ (NL5 x Haze A) x (Skunk #1 x Haze C) - (those genetics look very familiar). While the Haze AC was never released to the public, it served as the male parent in Mr. Nice’s series of crosses named after famous rock bands: The Doors, The Stones, The Cure, Pink Floyd, & U2. The Doors in particular is supposed to be a holy grail cross, consisting of Nevil’s original version of (Northern Lights #5 x Haze A) x Haze AC. It’s not an easy plant to find, although there may be some packs of unpopped seeds in collectors’ seed fridges, a few packs still available from certain European Seed Banks, & there’s definitely a clone of The Doors that’s not easy to find, but definitely pops up occasionally in the stock of some clone resellers. I last saw it for sale about 6 months ago from a US clone bank, so it’s definitely still floating around.
The Super Sativa Seed Company used the Haze A and Haze C males fairly extensively, as did several other Amsterdam based breeders before the plants were lost for good.
Jack is pure medicinal gold. No, make that Platinum! To anybody suffering from anxiety and depression...this is a godsend. Little info: I stay away from 90% of sativa's, as they're just not enough for what ails me physically, and mentally while helping with depression, many can get me manic, loopy, making anxiety worse...just not that fun any more after 3 decades of tokin'. I am all about the wonderful world of indicas and leaning hybrids. And I love CBD as well, but that's about point. THEN IT COMES TO JACK! A mostly sativa wonderherb, it hits quick, wiping away anxiety and depression fast, filling the void with a uplifting yet relaxing headspace.. Helps with stress tremendously . There's no manic energy, no anxiety, just a euphoric do whatever creative happy tranquility... medicine. It's so rare in the rec market in WA. Got last 1/8th ಥ‿ಥ Phat Panda has this one down perfect, gorgeous buds, aroma, taste, effects...all on point. A top ten strain of all time for me, and like I said, I'm an "indica snob". Toke on tokerz

My 3rd favorite sativa, I love the taste & the clear headed e ergetic buzz it gives me. Too much I end up couch locked & hazy, but the right amount I'm flying thru tasks easily.
My 3rd favorite sativa, I love the taste & the clear headed e ergetic buzz it gives me. Too much I end up couch locked & hazy, but the right amount I'm flying thru tasks easily.
I love the energy it gives me, I also really enjoy any offsprings of this like J1, Emerald Jack. My #2 favorite sativa.
I would give Jack Herer 4.8 out of 5 if I could- it’s a great strain. But I don’t see many people commenting on what ailment they are treating, and thus the effectiveness of that strain on their specific ailment.
First off, I’m not a doctor or a scientist. I’m simply a mid-twenties something female (pretty normal lifestyle for people my age) that smokes to treat anxiety and some other negative feelings and obsessions that come with having Borderline Personality Disorder, which can also lead to moments of too much energy, and others where it’s very difficult to find motivation.
Obviously, I need a few different strains. With Jack Herer- I was looking for a sativa with some of the effects listed above. I wanted to be more focused but relaxed, and just find some positive, creative energy for social situations and random projects that need to get done.
It’s a struggle not to get a sativa that can get a little too psychoactive- but Jack Herer isn’t too bad in the 1g oil cartridge I got from Heavy Hitters. I usually pick new strains based on if I know a little bit about it’s parent plants and if I’ve realky enjoyed both (maybe ones an indica, the other sativa) then I’ll try it. Practically every strain these days is a hybrid, but maybe it’s a psychosomatic thing that I tend to like 60/40s. Rumor is a little indica can chill out a more spazzing strain. And I still look online for new strains I haven’t heard of that have gotten some headlines for helping with anxiety.
So, I got Jack Herer because I kept seeing it everywhere and the positive “medical effects” here looked dope. One of its parents is also a haze- and guys, when a strain is a mostly sativa haze- it’s probably going to work decent for some kind of anxiety. I find skunk and afghan (maybe related?) to also perk your ears if you simply just ask the bud tender- “Can you tell me some of its’ parents’ strains?”
So Jack does have a haze parent, and won a lot of rewards in High Times- so I’d invest to see these claims.
I’m also curious about this strain with Heavy Hitters especially because it almost feels like they put some more terpenes back into the oil/or better preserve them while in production.
I’m always very relaxed.
Anyway, with Jack I can carry on a conversation without my usual getting distracted two minutes in, like I tend to do. If I was at work I could totally function and not get awkward. I do feel a slight tickle on my funny bone, but this is not a, “Duuuuddeee...” kind of high in the least.
I could totally get away with sipping wine at a soirée and smile at couples’ dancing- or something else where I can feel kinda fancy and just revel in and feel good about just being there and myself.
But sometimes I want Jack to get me a little more trippy, ironically. Giggle fits are the best. I see myself still being a little too serious with this guy.
But take this strain and two puffs, then switch cartridges or whatnot, to another sativa that’s a little more goofy-making, (right now I’m using blue dream for this) and it’s close to the perfect high.
I enjoy people more and revel in my empathy and daydreams. It also motivates me to get up and seize the day with creative and motivated energy. (If I’m a little too silly I just dance for awhile and only think I’m getting something done...) I don’t know if Jack could still get me where I want to be usually, alone, but it’s a chill enough sativa for novice smokers or anybody sensitive to weirdin’ out. I wouldn’t even mix with another weed if I was new to using marijuana as a medicine.
Remember, the most IMPORTANT thing when it comes to finding the right medication or a mixture, is that you don’t smoke too much!!!
That easy!!! Don’t want anxiety? Don’t want to get too high simply because this cartridge is around 84% THC? Take at most two long puffs- two short ones for novices. Don’t worry about looking cool and making hella clouds- trust me, ten minutes later when your drooling and wondering if you mighta peed yourself a little, you’ll really wish you just took one puff and could still hang out, with confidence, with the cool kids.
Make this stuff last! Take the correct dosage and see if you can really use it to treat your own anxiety and negative behavioral thinking.
Remember: you can never smoke less, but you can always smoke more. Just take a couple puffs and wait about ten minutes before you even think about it.
And for you and me Jack- I think we’ll be good friends. Maybe not the best- but definitely who Id hit up if my bestest friends were out of town and I just wanted someone to walk up and down the mall. This strain won’t make you anymore adventurous, just maybe a little bit more confident and less in your own head. And yes, I meant to put both “energetic” and “tired” as its’ effects.
Harvested 4-26-24 by Jack Herer Reserve, Michigan. 24.92% ThC,O% CBD. This strain is a 2024 High Times Michigan Cannabis Cup, People's Choice Sativa Flower contestant. Winner announced Dec 2, 2024 on YouTube. Smells of citrus and fruit loops. Large dense, spongy buds. Forest green, covered in sticky white trichomes, long rusty orange hairs, trichomes permeate through the bud. Great euphoria, zero eye pressure, body high, emergized focused, giggly, happy, "I want to move." Wonderful smooth euphoria that is just a touch dizzy on the head rush hits. Tasted like smoking pink iced animal crackers. Dry vanilla, smooth smoke, some tastes of herbal black tea. Finishes with a sweet vanilla, flowery, spicey, tingly tongue. World Class Sativa.
Jack Herer seems to live up to its legendary status, and honestly, I’m here for it. I picked some up from pullupdc in DC as a nighttime remedy to help me sleep better, and wow—it works like a charm. But the surprise came the morning after: I woke up feeling energized, clear-headed, and even a little creative. It’s like the mental fog just vanished overnight.
I’m about four puffs in right now, and let me tell you, the high kicks in quick. It’s this smooth body buzz that keeps you relaxed, but your mind feels sharp—perfect for unwinding without turning into a couch potato. The taste? Lightly earthy with a fresh, piney citrus vibe that lingers just right.
What stands out is how balanced it feels—calming but not sedative, uplifting but not overpowering. For me, this strain is all about washing away the stress of the day and setting the tone for an even better tomorrow. Highly recommend giving it a shot if you want the best of both worlds!
