May 4, 2017

Expressed flawlessly through balanced parts sweet, sour, and spirited, the iconic margarita was once called a perfect mixture by the New York Times. How to up the ante on perfection? Just add cannabis.

Our infused recipes below pair three riffs on the perfect cocktail with three perfect strains, whose flavor profiles shine through in tincture form. If you haven’t made a tincture before, it’s one of the easiest DIY extraction methods—check out our handy guide to see how it’s done.

Cannabis tinctures 101: How to make, consume, and dose them

Classic Canna-Margarita

3 Cannabis-Infused Margarita Recipes You Must Make This Summer | Leafly

Strain pairing: Tangerine Power (Hybrid)

Why Tangerine Power? A classic margarita relies on two strong flavors: lime and tequila. The splash of orange imparted by Cointreau is a more subtle modifier. But add of a bit of Tangerine Power tincture, and the citrus flavor is bumped to first-class status, playing a stronger role in the drink. Bottoms up!

  • 2 ounces tequila (reposado or silver)
  • 1 ounce fresh-squeezed lime juice
  • ¾ ounces Cointreau
  • 10mg* worth of Tangerine Power tincture
  • Salt (optional) and lime to garnish

  1. Add liquid ingredients to a cocktail shaker and shake with ice until cold and thoroughly mixed.
  2. Wet rim of a rocks glass or margarita glass with lime juice and dip in salt, if desired.
  3. Strain cocktail into glass over fresh ice.
  4. Garnish with lime and serve.

Non-Alcoholic Mango Mockarita

3 Cannabis-Infused Margarita Recipes You Must Make This Summer | Leafly

Strain pairing: Mango (Indica)

Why Mango? This heavy-duty strain kicks the flavor in this non-alcoholic drink up a notch—and if you buy into the cannabis adage that mango gets you higher, you’re in luck with the myrcene-heavy terpene profile on this strain.

  • 2–3 slices ripe mango
  • 2 ounces orange juice
  • 1 ounce fresh-squeezed lime juice
  • ½ ounce agave nectar
  • 2 ice cubes
  • 10mg* worth of Mango tincture
  • Orange slice and sugar to garnish

  1. Add drink ingredients to a blender and purée until smooth.
  2. Wet rim of a cocktail glass with orange juice and dip rim in sugar.
  3. Pour margarita into cocktail glass, garnish, and serve.

Strawberry Cough-a-Rita

3 Cannabis-Infused Margarita Recipes You Must Make This Summer | Leafly

Strain pairing: Strawberry Cough (Sativa)

Why Strawberry Cough? This strain is so named for its sweet strawberry flavor, but also for its lung-expanding hits that tend to cause coughing fits—when smoked, that is. Take away the smoke, and this strain goes down super-smooth.

  • 4 large strawberries
  • 2 ounces silver tequila
  • 1 ounce fresh-squeezed lime juice
  • ¾ ounce Cointreau
  • 3–4 large ice cubes
  • 10mg* worth of Strawberry Cough tincture
  • Lime wheel to garnish

  1. Add drink ingredients to blender and pulse until slushy.
  2. Serve in a Mason jar garnished with a lime wheel.
How to Pair Food and Drinks With Cannabis Terpenes

*Note: Specific volumes of cannabis tincture are not included due to the fact that tincture potency can vary incredibly widely—10mg may mean anything from a few drops to a whole dropper-full. Always familiarize yourself with the potency of your tincture before adding it to alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages—the actual amount you use should be modified based on the strength of your tincture and the potency you desire. The best way to verify potency is to start with one portion of a drink, wait one to two hours, then make an informed decision on whether to consume more. Always dose carefully and listen to your body, and never drive under the influence of cannabis or alcohol.
