The best cannabis strains for sparking creativity

July 12, 2017
(Gillian Levine for Leafly)
Cannabis has long been a companion for creative minds. It has a way of expanding the imagination, enabling access to new thoughts, concepts, and ideas. For many of us, cannabis adds color to our world and allows us to appreciate small nuances that are normally filtered out by our busy brains.

Not all strains are created equal, thanks to differences in their terpene and cannabinoid profiles. Sure, some artists couldn’t care less what strains they keep stocked alongside pens and brushes, but others swear by specific strains and rely on them for stimulating creative thought.

This list features strains that Leafly reviewers rate as highly creative, so consider giving them a try if you’re looking to kindle inspiration.

Amnesia is a great strain for creativity and energy.

    • Ellzey

Ha, Amnesia would knock me on the floor before I could pump out a single painting.

      Dry or vap?

Whilst in school, I would study different styles, but once I established my own style, I rarely deviated.

I became a bit jaded over the years, and would spew hate on the abstract or surrealists, figuring these forms of art were just excuses to do a poor job. And in many cases I still think that’s true. But, I decided to dabble in Marijuana for my art. I was curios as to what I would come up with.

Boy was I surprised. I would just close my eyes, and let the pen do the walking. The visions I had would be constant, and I felt as if I was part of the paintings. The style became so crazy I decided to start posting various things I did the night prior

I’ve noticed that the sativas result in very hard lines, and indicas have a very smooth flow. But either way, these are styles that I have never touched on before (mostly), abstract, surreal, and scary.

MMJ changed my art for the better.

I have enjoyed growing Cheese and Lemon Haze…. always a winner and keeps me in my zone as I work.
For creating music I enjoy God’s Gift and ATF for that groove.

    • Adepeju Oluyemisi

Are you using the dry or tank? Due to where I live Im having to transition to the tank and looking for something that works for focus and creativity.

If these strains are good for creativity why then is “creativity” the last in the list of effects?

Ganesh OG is my go to strain for artistic creativity. I get focused and motivated, but also relaxed.

Purchased at a new dispensary in Alaska, “Jack Herer” gave me the worst case of munchies ever! I think I hurt myself! Thatll teach me to be greedy with it! Otherwise, it was great! Reduced the neuro pain, and settled my mind. But gawd, those munchies! NOOOooo!

  • Jack McTerra

I just finished 1 year-long experiment where I microdosed cannabis pretty much daily to boost my creativity as a writer. I discovered that when
using cannabis (in right doses) I:

    – can easily get into flow

    – am less critical towards myself, hence more fearless in my writing

    – feel generally more creative (better plot, better choice of words, more complex sentences, many good comparisons)

    – write faster (around 3 to 4 times the usual speed)

    – find writing much easier, playful, and more fun

    – am more passionate about my work

    – can easily learn from my mistakes and problems (thanks to the insightful nature of the plant)

Feel free to have a look 🙂

Cannabisis really great. Beside all of the positive effects, it’s cheap, easily available, non-toxic, and from my experience, as good as other
    psychedelic drugs (like acid).

You should look into adding Cinderella ’99 to the list. It helps wonders with writers block
