The Leafly Buyer’s Guide to Southern California Cannabis Flower

David BienenstockLast updated July 28, 2020

The Leafly Buyer’s Guide provides a curated editorial list of top cannabis product picks on the market now, chosen by local experts in each region.

1)Jungle Boys: Wedding Cake

(@jungleboys/Instagram)

Based in: Los Angeles

Loud and proud out of Los Angeles, the Jungle Boys are local legends 15 years in the making who’ve grown a dedicated following via their unparalleled in-house breeding program. Supplies are always limited, so don’t wait for your wedding day to try Wedding Cake, a potent hybrid cross of Girl Scout Cookies and Cherry Pie with “tangy and peppery notes” and a THC content often well north of 25%.

Three places to find it: TLC Collective in Los Angeles; Deserts Finest in Desert Hot Springs; WHTC in Studio City

2) THC Designs: XJ-13

(Courtesy of THC Designs)

Based in: Los Angeles

Hand harvested, hand trimmed and hand packaged, THC Design’s line of cannabis flowers and prerolled joints are responsibly grown using sustainable practices. Pick up one of their stylish cases holding 6 artisanal prerolled cones (3.5 total grams of cannabis) and choose from Indica, Sativa or Hybrid. Or better yet, try one of their flagship flower strains, like XJ-13, a sativa dominant cross of Jack Herer and G13 Haze.

Three places to find it: Herbal Pain Relief Center in Los Angeles; Calaveras Little Trees in Arnold; and People’s OC (Delivery) in Orange County

3) Wonderbrett: Orange Dynamite Stick

(Courtesy of Wonderbrett)

Based in: Los Angeles

When one of Southern California’s premiere cannabis cultivators teamed up with roots-rockers Sublime w/ Rome for a collab strain release, the fruits of that labor was Orange Dynamite Stick. A cross of Bubble Gum and Frisco Cookies, Wonderbrett’s latest boutique strain produces dense, resin-soaked buds covered in orange hairs, with a powerful orange-citrus aroma to match.

Three places to find it: Apothecary in Los Angeles; The High Side in Riverside; Eaze (Statewide delivery)

4) Nativ: Black Label Preroll

(Courtesy of Nativ)

Based in:Venice

Founded in progressive Venice by two medical cannabis patients hoping to battle the lingering stigma of prohibition, Nativ produces a variety of sustainably farmed, all-natural prerolled joints, plus bubble hash and a line of rosin-powered extract pods specifically designed to work with the Pax Era vaporizer. Their Black Label preroll contains only their top-shelf, Private Reserve cannabis flower and concentrates, presented in an elegant single-serving tube.

Three places to find it: Los Angeles Artist Collective in Los Angeles; Anaheim Patient Care in Anaheim; West Valley Caregivers in Woodland Hills.

5) Canndescent: Calm

(Courtesy of Canndescent)

Based in: Santa Barbara

The cultivation team at Cannadescent brings over 70 years of collective experience to the table, and oversees every step of a process that starts with their own proprietary genetics, and involves setting up strain specific, small-scale grow rooms optimized with purified water, natural pest-control and artisanal harvesting and curing procedures. Choose from Calm, Cruise, Create, Connect, and Charge based on your desired effect.

Three places to find it: The OG Collective in Cathedral City; Harbor Collective in San Diego; Strange Therapy Solutions in Banning

6) West Coast Cure: King Louis XIII

(Leafly)

Based in: Los Angeles

The producers of Coachella—Southern California’s hippest music festival— don’t allow cannabis on premises (AEG founder Philip Anschutz is a major funder of anti-cannabis propaganda), but that didn’t stop West Coast Cure from presenting a legendary herbal hospitality party just outside the festival’s gate, attracting performers, celebs, and local weed legends. No royalty attended, aside from King Louis XVIII, a heavily pine-scented indica strain with dense buds and a powerful high fit for a king.

Three places to find it: New Amsterdam Naturals in Los Angeles; Heaven in Fresno; Whittier Daily Greens in Whittier

7) Cannabiotix: Orange Crush

(Courtesy of Cannabiotix)

Based in: Los Angeles

Long a favorite cultivation team among SoCal cannabis connoisseurs, Cannabiotix made waves at the 2015 Southern California Cannabis Cup by taking home high honors for Best Hybrid Flower with their version of Orange Crush—a sativa-dominant cross of California Orange and Blueberry with powerful cerebral effects and a sweet and tangy citrus aroma.

Three places to find it: Melrose Herbal Collective in Los Angeles; Bud Man (Delivery) in Orange County; Universal Collective in Studio City

8)Lowell Farms: Preroll Pack

(Courtesy of Lowell Farms)

Based in: Santa Barbara

From the creative minds behind the one ounce cannabis bouquet that made headlines around the world comes an elegantly (and sustainably) packaged box of 7 prerolls. Every 0.5 gram joint is filled with premium cannabis flower that’s sun-grown with organic fertilizer and pesticides, and tests between 22-25% THC. Each pack even comes with a few real wood matches, the best way to spark up a truly tasty joint.

Three places to find it: Mankind Cooperative in San Diego; OC3 – Orange County Cannabis Club in Santa Ana; The Cannary in Los Angeles

9) Urbols: Skywalker OG

(Courtesy of Urbols)

Based in: Los Angeles

Urbols turned a lot of heads by taking home a silver medal for their Skywalker OG at the 2017 Southern California Cannabis Cup, but that crowning achievement came after more than a decade of refining their indoor cultivation program and fostering a stable of top-shelf strains. The Skywalker OG is a cross between Skywalker and OG Kush with wonderfully sedative effects and “a spicy herbal scent tinged with jet fuel.”

Two places to find it: California Caregiver Alliance in Los Angeles; The Green Element in Torrance

10)Chong’s Choice: Durban Poison

(Courtesy of Chong’s Choice)

Based in: Los Angeles

In addition to being one of the world’s most recognizable cannabis celebrities, Tommy Chong has also been a cannabis patient, advocate and even prisoner during his well publicized long term relationship with Mary Jane. Now add supplier to that list. Naturally each Chong’s Choice preroll weighs in at .75 grams (compared to .5 for most of the competition). That’s what happens when you roll with a legend.

Three places to find it: Desert Organic Solutions in Palm Springs; New Generation in Santa Ana; Zen Healing in West Hollywood
